Canon MP996 Ink Absorber Full Reset
An absorber warning on Canon MP996 does not necessarily mean that the printer is mechanically damaged. The software counter and the physical pads must be considered separately.
The waste ink counter inside Canon MP996
Cleaning operations send unused ink into absorber pads inside the printer. Canon MP996 estimates their usage with an electronic counter and can lock printing when that value reaches its limit.
Wic Reset Connect is designed to reset the compatible counter in Canon MP996. The physical waste ink system should still be inspected and maintained when necessary.
How to enter service mode on Canon MP996
- Turn the printer off.

- Wait briefly, then release Power. The power indicator should remain steadily lit.
Reset the counter in Canon MP996
Service mode must be entered correctly before Wic Reset Connect can communicate with the maintenance interface. Resolve other printer errors first.

Prepare the printer
Resolve other errors, confirm a steady power light and enter service mode using the sequence above.

Connect directly by USB
Connect Canon MP996 to a Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11 computer without Wi-Fi or a USB hub.

Start Wic Reset Connect
Run the program as Administrator and wait until the Canon service-mode device is detected.

Enter the key and reset
Enter the purchased key, select Reset and keep the printer connected until confirmation appears.
If Canon MP996 is not detected
- Run Wic Reset Connect as Administrator and keep internet access active for key validation.
- Close Canon maintenance utilities and clear paused print jobs before opening Wic Reset Connect.
- If Windows does not detect a service-mode device, restart the printer normally, wait 10 seconds and repeat the preparation.
- Connect Canon MP996 directly to the computer and try another data-capable USB cable or port.
Canon MP996 reset FAQ
Does the reset clean the ink absorber?
No. It resets the stored counter. Inspect, clean or replace the absorber pads when their physical condition requires maintenance.
Does Canon MP996 require service mode?
Yes. The printer must expose its maintenance interface before the counter can be reset with Wic Reset Connect.
Can I perform the reset over Wi-Fi?
No. Use a direct USB connection between the printer and a Windows computer.
